Garden Update 5/4/5
May 4, 2005 · No Comments
It’s been hit or miss. I suspect I need a greenhouse.
Seeds that I’ve planted directly into the ground are all coming up. In the case of the flowers, this is a mixed bag, as I got impatient and stuck them in the ground. Lots of them are sprouting, but if you held a gun to my head and insisted that I identify what’s where? You’d be scraping my brains off your walls. I have no EARTHLY idea. We’ll just see what they are when they bloom, and even then? It’s going to be hit or miss as to whether I can identify them.
I’ve got radishes starting to get big enough to eat, although, see below, I’ve got no clue which variety is which. Need better organization next year. And those of you who are eagerly anticipating an anal retentive listing of carrot varieties, don’t hold your breath. I will have no idea about those either.
Lettuce was a little frightening. I planted some seeds, which, I carefully labelled, and then waited. And waited. And waited. They took forever to come up. I suspect I planted the seeds too deep. But they are starting to sprout, and when it is time to bite they little heads off and nibble on they tiny feet, I will know what I’m eating.
I threw a bunch of varieties of peas in a short trench together (Dad the Gardener’s comment: "Well, good luck with that" He’s a little smug, I think it is attributable to his superior Hardiness Zone.) They’re up, but not yet flowering. Can I wait? No, no I can’t.
And the Spinach and Chard - Ah, I could wax rhapsodic about spinach all day. But won’t. It is so beautiful. Baby size. I could eat it now, but I’m trying my damnedest to hold off.
I stuck some surreptitious sunflowers in a most inappropriate space. I remember where those are, and when someone complains, I will remind SOMEONE that someone’s tools were spread for MONTHS where I wanted to put them. I’ll probably plant more at that point, but for right now, I am JUST saying: "PUT YOUR TOYS AWAY."
Stuff I planted indoors from seed just doesn’t look like it’s going to make it. I’m pretty convinced that I probably need a greenhouse, or a hot bed, or a cold frame to get away with what I tried to do indoors. It all did okay until I tried to harden it off, and I just don’t have the knack for that. So it’s going to be plants for me on cukes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and canteloupe. That’s okay, although a little disappointing. 1000 pounds of tomatoes for 2.00 would have been nice.
The I tried broc and cauliflower from seed, but again, they got very leggy, I over planted them indoors, and Dad the prize-winning gardener (and you think I’m kidding, but NO), said scrap the whole thing. He did give me a few fertilizing tips, so I’m hopeful that this year they’ll flower, instead of just being real leafy like last year.
We continue with the free raised bed building, and right now, let me tell you, the free raised beds are kicking all sorts of ass.

Plant a Radish, Get a Radish, Occasionally Some Doubt
May 4, 2005 · No Comments
I just taste tested some of the many radishes in my garden. Which are up. Which, YAY.
Slight problem. I’m not sure which one is which type, so I have ABSOLUTELY no idea which one I like.
Except there was one that tasted a little odd, which was my favorite one, which I suspect was the daikon, as it had an oddly familiar Asian cooking taste to it.
But, uh, do you think I remember from whence I picked it? If your answer is yes, you are wrong-o.
