My kids are so weird.
A couple of weeks ago my eldest and my youngest got into a fight that my youngest really wanted me to get in the middle of. As this is something I’ve been working on, I walked away, said I didn’t see anything, wasn’t going to take sides, and, if I recall correctly, came up with a lose-lose solution, hoping they’d come up with something they both liked better.
No luck. Charlie immediately started following me around. I reiterated that I hadn’t seen anything, didn’t know anything, and I’d come up with the best solution I could.
"But Mom. You know how Caroline lies. And you know that I… well, I’m going to say I’ve never lied, but you know I’ve been working really hard about telling the truth. I haven’t lied to you since….."
[silence]
"Char?"
[silence]
"Charlie? When was the last time you lied to me?"
"I’m not sure."
"Charlie? Did you lie to me today?"
"I’m not sure" [pause] "What did I tell you about how I fell off my bike?"
"You said you came around the corner, swerved to miss Dad’s car, and fell off the bike."
"Hmm." [pause] "You’re going to either be really mad at me, or you’re going to laugh really hard."
"Charlie?"
"Okay, okay. Well, I thought that if I got really good riding my bike with my eyes closed, then I’d be really good riding with my eyes open. When I opened them, I was about three inches from Dad’s car."
